History of the Diebold Safe Company

This company was founded in 1859 by Charles Diebold. It was then called Diebold Bahmann Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. The main business of the company was to manufacture vaults and safes. The safes made by this company were a sure hit and their popularity was heightened when Diebold safes sustained the Great Chicago fire with all the contents of every safe preserved and spared. This marked the beginning of tremendous sales boom causing the company to move site to Canton, Ohio. From then on, the company under the new name Diebold Safe and Lock Company, per its 1876 incorporation, became a leader in the vault and safe industry.

There were enhancements and innovations made to the Diebold safes. They were made to be fireproof as well as robber and burglar proof.

The Diebold Safe Co. made the Cannonball safe, it’s round design being first introduced to the market by Marvin Safe Co. almost 5 years prior. It was given that name because of its unique round shape. In the 1800s this type of safes were displayed in banks and with a heavy weight of 3,600 pounds came the impossibility for robbery and burglary.

To be robber proof, Diebold Company utilized a triple time lock in its manufactured cannonball safes. The implication of this – the safe can only be opened during daytime. This hindered any attempts of robbers to open the safe at night, when robberies usually take place.

Banks which employed the use of Diebold Cannonball safe, displayed the safe in a conspicuous place in the bank to reassure their clients that their money was safe them. The banks put trimmings and decorations on the safe to further attract clients. The safe was painted with gold-colored paints and embellished with hand-jewelling painting technique thus creating sparkling diamond illusions. The decoration made the safe really attractive.

Diebold safes were produced in the later years of 1876, more than a century ago. This makes the Diebold safe an antique in nature. True enough, Diebold safes are rare at this point in time and if ever you find one, it will surely cost you thousands of dollars. But it is not impossible to find one today.
